Panda Plant – Kalanchoe tomentosa

Succulent Kokedama

The art of Kokedama has been around for centuries, dating back some 400 years to Japan’s Edo era. It literally translates from ‘koke’ meaning moss, and ‘dama’ meaning ball.

There are general care tips for most kokedama, but here are our tips that we’ve found to work very well with succulents.

Kokedama Care Tips

Sunlight

Succulents like the Panda Plant thrive a place with lots of light.

They even do well in full sun but avoid placing it in direct sunlight for long periods of the day. This is because too much direct sunlight may burn the plant. Because your succulent is being housed in organic material, it will also dry the kokedama out quickly.

Your best place is a bright room filled with indirect sunlight.

Watering your Kokedama

Succulents don’t need to be watered a lot, so only water every week or two in the warmer months, and every two to three weeks when cooler.

A good way to know whether your succulent kokedama needs a drink is to check how light it is. If it’s like a tennis ball, it’s time to water.

Submerge the ball of the kokedama in a bowl of water and leave it for about 15-20 minutes. After it’s had its drink, give it small squeeze Let it drip out excess water and then put it back in its place.

Don’t let your plant sit in water because mould is likely to develop. It can also leave your Panda plant wet for too long and cause root rot

Keeping it clean and healthy

If you’re not after a hanging kokedama, a great way to display your plant is to place it on a small plate or saucer to your liking.

Clip off any dead or dying leaves as they develop to help keep your plant healthy. You should be able to enjoy your kokedama for several years before it’s time to move your plant to a new one.
